One Thousand Twenties

In 2006, Ben Cannon - a teacher and community volunteer - decided to run for State Representative. Frustrated with conventional campaigns, he decided to do things differently. Instead of raising money from special interests and corporate donors, he raised every dollar from individuals. He did this by going door-to-door with a coffee can in hand. Receiving $5 at one door and $100 at another, he ended up with donations from more than 500 neighbors and friends. And he won.

Four years later, Ben remains the only Oregon legislator never to accept a penny from special interests. He has been a champion for public interest causes such as the environment and campaign finance reform. Now, as he runs for re-election, he is trying something new again. He is attempting to recruit 1000 people to donate to his campaign at the $20 level or above.

This is not simply about raising money. This is about changing the way we finance campaigns in Oregon and across the country. This is about changing the way that policy gets crafted by changing the way politics works. This is about showing candidates and office holders that it is possible to change business as usual.

Ben Cannon needs your help - not just to be re-elected, but to make a point. Join us by signing up below, and spread the word.
